Devotional: Living Gratitude

Living Gratitude

Remember your leaders, those who spoke the word of God to you; consider the outcome of their way of life, and imitate their faith. (Hebrews 13:7 NRSV)

One of our extraordinary patients, when asked if anyone had a testimony to share, would invariably say, “I thank my God that I awoke this morning, clothed, and in my right mind.” Whenever Ms. Jessie Mae would start the testimony time with her hand raised, we came to expect her words of thankfulness and gratitude. She lived into her 90s and loved God each day with all of her heart, soul, mind, and strength. We fondly remember her wheeling around in her wheelchair with her oversized Bible on her lap, offering to read to anyone who would listen, and pray with anyone who was willing to pray with her. Heaven received her recently. We are sure she is walking, and leaping, and praising God…thanking God in person, that she awakened, clothed, and in her right mind.

Each of our facilities has stories of gratitude and thankfulness to God. We all have heroes of faith among us. Today is a day to celebrate the faithful among us. Today is a day to be grateful, to thank someone for their great example in our midst.

Prayer: Thank You, God, for those who have carried faith to us from generations past, and those persons of faith who influence us each time we see them.  God, we want to do better at loving, at living lives of faith and faithfulness. Help us today to be grateful persons and to find someone to thank and to be grateful for in our lives. Amen.
