Devotional: Rewards of Confidence

Rewards of Confidence

Do not, therefore, abandon that confidence of yours; it brings a great reward. For you need endurance, so that when you have done the will of God, you may receive what was promised. Hebrews 10:35-36 NRSV

One of our rehab patients, let’s call her “Mrs. B,” suffers from a physically debilitating condition. Her two daughters are by her side encouraging her, reading scriptures, singing songs of faith. These daughters were glad that we could speak positively in the room and to be confident in the goodness of the Lord. We sang one of her favorite hymns, “Great is Thy Faithfulness,” and their mother joined in, remembering the words and using some of her lyric-retention experience from years of singing in church choirs.

This family is developing the promised fruit of years of trusting God through the trials and sufferings. The Apostle Paul writes in the Epistle to the Romans: “We know that when we suffer we develop endurance, which shapes our characters. When our characters are refined, we learn what it means to hope and anticipate God’s goodness.  And hope will never fail to satisfy our deepest need because the Holy Spirit that was given to us has flooded our hearts with God’s love.”  Romans 5:3-5 The Voice

We are promised that as we develop endurance and do the will of God we receive what was promised. Hope is one of the promises we can have as we anticipate the goodness of God. The Spirit of God floods our hearts with hope and love, God’s love. Hope and love can fill our hearts with music and remind us of songs we might not have otherwise remembered.

Maybe we know someone who needs the encouragement of a song of faith, a song of confidence, a song of endurance, a song of hope, a song of love. Let’s sing confidently. Our songs might just invite a response of faith and a promise fulfilled.

Prayer: Dear God, We thank You for Your many promises. We thank You that we can ask You and receive confidence, hope, and love. Thank You for the power of songs of faith and positive, encouraging encounters with your children. Continue to help us to see Your goodness. Continue to help us see the rewards of confidence. Continue to flood our hearts with Your amazing love. Amen.
