Devotional: Signs of Spring

Signs of Spring

Then your light shall break forth like the dawn, and your healing shall spring up quickly; your vindicator shall go before you, the glory of the Lord shall be your rear guard.  Then you shall call, and the Lord will answer; you shall cry for help, and he will say, Here I am. The Lord will guide you continually, and satisfy your needs in parched places, and make your bones strong; and you shall be like a watered garden, like a spring of water, whose waters never fail. (Isaiah 58:8-9,11NRSV)

In the midst of winter weather when branches of trees reach and stretch to the sky, something deep is happening in the roots. Somehow, the sap mysteriously flows from the roots through the trunk to the branches. At the very tip of the branches the signs of spring are evident even in our current sub-freezing and frigid temperatures. If we look closely, we will see the buds at the very tip of the branches…awaiting the signal to grow and become leaves and fruit.

Some of our newly admitted rehab patients could remind us of trees in winter without too many signs of healing happening. As we pray for them, care for them, offer therapy, patient-centered care, and nurse them well, we start to see the buds and the signs of life and healing happening.

An example of signs of spring: One of our family members recently offered a glowing report of the care her mother is receiving at our facility. This daughter said her mother had been in four different facilities in the past few months. This facility was different because she could see signs of her mother healing here. When her mother first arrived an “isolation sign” hung on the door but not anymore. The sign is down and her mother is alert and healing. The daughter noted the loving care and prayerful atmosphere. A new season of spring is happening now for her mother.

All around us we have opportunities to pray for spring, for signs of spring. We can offer a prayer, offer care, and await the signs of healing happening. Something in the roots will send buds to the tips of the branches. One day we will be able to see the signs of spring…blooming beautifully.

Prayer: Thank You, O God, for all of the healing You offer each day. Help us, O Lord to encourage care and prayer today as we await signs of spring and healing happening all around us. Amen.
