The Way to Build
It shall be said, “Build up, build up, prepare the way, remove every obstruction from my people’s way.” For thus says the high and lofty one who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy: I dwell in the high and holy place, and also with those who are contrite and humble in spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite. Isaiah 57:14-15 NRSV
The way has been prepared. Obstacles and obstructions have been removed. The long-awaited bridge to a major road in our city is opening. The black drapes covering the exit signed have been removed and the barriers blocking the entrance will be removed. This bridge has been in the planning stages, the erecting stages, the testing stages, the signage stages, the newscasts, and now, the opening awaits us. Two major roads will finally connect after years of exiting and navigating surface streets between them.
Anecdotes from history remind us that when a town or city wanted to build a cathedral, they started by planting trees. It might take one hundred years and several generations to erect a cathedral or ornate place of worship. The faith to plant trees by the elders of the community was realized by their children and grandchildren seeing the edifice completed with the wood that began as seeds and seedlings.
God revives the humble and contrite. Let us pay attention to what is reviving in us. Creative ideas may be divinely-inspired ideas. Let us listen to our inner voice of creativity; it might be from God! When we think and have ideas such as “Wouldn’t it be nice if _____[fill in the blank] happened?”, are we ready to dream about it, cast a vision with a friend, consult an expert, make plans, or plant trees? How will we prepare the way for greater things? Hopefully, we will prepare with grace and humility.
Prayer: God, You are the One who gives grace to the humble. We thank you for creative ideas, for plans to build, for dreams to be realized, for inspired thoughts to come to fruition. Give us wisdom to prepare the way, to navigate obstacles, remove obstructions, and live long enough to see some of this legacy You are inspiring.
