October 23rd Autumn Memorial Service

On October 23rd we held an Autumn Memorial Service to remember and honor our loved ones who have passed away. None of us is ever the same after we lose a loved one. Death leaves a permanent mark on the living. For some of us, we are on the brink of a new search for God, or a new way of seeing God, in light of this loss.

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow wrote:

“Lives of great [ones] all remind us

We can make our lives sublime,

And, departing, leave behind us

Footprints on the sands of time.”

Our loved ones left footprints in every area of life…

They left footprints in the churches, synagogues, and community groups…

They left footprints at their workplaces…

They left footprints in their neighborhoods…

They left footprints in their families…

We shared stories of the footprints of loved ones…friends and family members who have passed on… A service like this helps us know that we are not alone in our grief. It is important to see our loved one for who they were as a person. We have memories of both good and not so good. No person is perfect. We have probably experienced both tears and smiles about them. As we shared our stories with one another, we asked for God to meet us and comfort us in this sacred space of time. The service was conducted by Chaplain Nancy Penton from SHC of Buckhead and Chaplain Amber Blandford from Bristol Hospice. Our next scheduled memorial service will be held in the Spring of 2015.
